Fold Out Laptop Desk
Much like many 14yo boys, our son’s needs are pretty well-defined and simple. He wanted a place to lay his head, a place to store his stuff and a place to work on his laptop computer. He wasn’t interested in a full-on desk, nor did we really have space for it after we transformed his sister’s side of the rig and built out a full desk with a hidden litter box area for the cats!
The solution was equally simple and elegant – a custom-built, walnut, fold-out laptop computer desk installed at the end of the jackknife sofa he calls home. This compact, foldaway desk was designed and built by Larry at the Foretravel Factory in Nacogdoches, TX out of solid walnut. Installation involved removing the arm from the adjacent sofa, and attaching the self-contained desk unit to the sidewall of the neighboring cabinet. At the rear of the space, there is a power strip with four grounded outlets and two USB outlets for ease of adding and charging peripherals and the whole thing tucks away into a space of no more than 4″.
Building a Fold-Out Laptop Computer Desk
First step was to remove the arm of the jackknife sofa. We then installed a surge protector and power strip and connected it to our power supply. This is separate from but convenient to the flip-out desk unit. The walnut unit was designed and constructed of solid walnut and consists of a desktop piece that is approximately 12″ x 21″ with a stop on the end to prevent it from pivoting too far, or sliding all the way out and a storage box that is connected to the adjacent cabinet. The storage box also features a narrow ledge on which the desktop rests when it is opened. The folded dimension of the storage cabinet is 16″ x 4″ x 24″.
