Affordable, Wall-Hugger Adjustable Bed Base for an RV
In order to maximize the functionality and space-saving in our RV bedroom and office space on our Class A motorhome, in addition to changing from a queen sized bed to a full sized bed, we opted to replace the built-in bed base with an adjustable wall-hugger bed base that would snug up against the wall and allow for easier passage in and out of our two-person office at the back of our RV. Because our bedroom floorplan placed the master bed in an east-west position instead of the more typical north-south position on top of the engine hump, we had more flexibility in choosing a new platform for our bed.
Maximize Space Around an RV Bed
Our goal was to increase the available space around the bed so that we could roll out a yoga mat in the morning, put on a pair of pants, or you know…make the bed while not also standing on it. Wall hugger models are designed to pull up against the wall when flexing into an upright position, gaining us seventeen additional inches at the end of the bed when the bed is in its ‘day position.’ When the adjustable base is fully pulled up against the wall, we have 33″ in which to pass at the foot of the bed.
Leggett and Platt S-Cape Adjustable Wall-hugger Bed
We did our research at the storefront mattress discount stores, asking questions and learning about the features available. We crawled around on the floor, and checked out the motors and mechanisms to see what we’d be dealing with for underbed storage and looked at how we’d be able to secure the bed base to the floor for safety under way. We knew we wanted the wall-hugger feature and we thought we would prefer a wireless remote. We did price comparisons, read reviews and finally settled on the well reviewed, but much lower priced Leggett and Platt S-Cape Adjustable Bed, available online at Amazon.com.
We paid less than half what was wanted in the department stores, and our purchase was covered under Amazon Prime delivery, so we did not pay extra for having it delivered. It came with the wireless remote (including batteries), the manual, legs in both 7″ and 11″, a wire frame to contain the foot of the mattress, and hardware to attach a headboard. The bed base was simple to assemble, requiring the end user only to attach the legs and plug it in once the bed is in place – could have done it myself if I could have lifted it alone, but alas…that is a two-person job.
The S-cape bedframe is adjustable at both the head and the foot, offering almost limitless possibilities for positioning. We put the head up at night when we want to watch a movie in bed, or use a reclining position when napping or meditating. The wireless remote includes 3 preset positions including a “zero-gravity” option that really does relax the back, and provides you the ability to program a button to save your favorite position. In addition, the S-Cape model offers massage options at both the head and foot, independently or together and also has a “wave” setting to move the massage heads up and down. A little loud, but otherwise a nice bonus feature!
A couple of things to note for RVers – we found that the “Program” function for the bed loses its memory when all power is removed. Also, when boondocking, since our bed is on 110v, and not the 12v, we’ve learned to lay the bed flat before we pull power so that we don’t have to use the manual reset button on the motorized base.
Adjustable Bed Base Recommendation
All in all, we’re very happy with this purchase. The bed base was affordable, delivery was simple and on-time, assembly was a breeze and the operation has been flawless. We have recommended this bed base to more than a few of our RV friends as well as those in sticks and bricks. We think it’s one of the better purchases we’ve made to improve our space and efficiency.
